Dani Hedges's head is often in the clouds, dreaming up the next crazy idea. From holding twilight art markets in her hometown of Motueka to experimenting with acrylics and watercolours, Dani is an amazing contemporary New Zealand artist. Her love for creating beautiful things and surprising people has been a driving force since her early years. As she puts it, "I loved creating beautiful things, surprising people, making them smile."

Finding Inspiration

For Dani, inspiration can strike at any moment. Whether she's daydreaming, taking a stroll in nature, or jotting down ideas in her sketchbook, creativity knows no bounds. "Ideas can come to me simply daydreaming or walking around," she says. "While working, I’ll get ideas on what I want to paint, forever making little notes." Her process is fluid, allowing her ideas to flow freely onto the canvas.

Reigniting the Creative Spark

But what about those moments when inspiration seems elusive? Dani has a unique approach to reigniting her creative spark. "Isolate—sounds harsh, but my brain can run 100 miles like an internet browser with 10 tabs open," she explains. "If I don’t slow down, I crash." So she takes a step back, pulls out a notebook or pad, and starts with a brain dump of practical goals and crazy ideas. Then, she does something physical, like getting out in nature or walking her dog. Finally, she grabs a blank paper, card, or canvas, along with some colours that make her happy, and lets the creativity grow with each layer. It's a process that allows her to reconnect with her inner muse and find inspiration in the world around her.

The Evolution of Art

Over the years, Dani's art has evolved, reflecting her changing interests and inspirations. "I started out mostly painting flowers and landscapes," she explains. "My work has become more bold and expressive with colours, textures, and new ideas," she reflects. "Delving into murals has been a fun challenge, and I can't see myself stopping anytime soon." From local scenes to sea creatures, Dani's art is a reflection of her environment and experiences.

The Power of Creativity

For Dani, art is more than just a hobby—it's a way of life. "It makes me happy, brings me joy and peace," she says. Her favourite mediums, acrylics and inks, allow her to express herself in unique and vibrant ways. "Inks you can play with in so many different ways," she adds. "They’re very fun and an easy way to add a pop of colour." Balancing art with the demands of everyday life can be a struggle, but for Dani, it's a necessary pursuit. "Art is a necessity for me," she explains. "So, I push myself to make time for it, as I always feel better once I've completed something new."

Favourite Creations

"I have many favourites," Dani laughs. But among her many creations, Dani holds a special fondness for her latest piece, a chorus box in Marahau. "It is very 'me,' featuring beach scenes, sea creatures, shells, and a wee surprise at the back with the local landscape."

Embracing Challenges

From tackling murals to exploring new techniques, Dani isn't afraid to push the boundaries of her art. "I can’t see myself stopping anytime soon," she says. "Having big ideas keeps me motivated and inspired." Her willingness to embrace challenges and step outside her comfort zone is what sets her apart as an artist.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Outside of art, Dani finds joy in reading, gardening, and spending time with her dog Spyda and partner Rueb. She's also a passionate traveler, having explored destinations like Australia, Singapore, Maldives, and beyond.
