"This artwork was part of a series I created in 2023 called 'New Zealand through the Looking Glass.' Customers sent me photos of their favourite New Zealand places in a natural setting. A customer requested featuring the beach bach their family would holiday at during the summer. Included in the art is a pied shag, which is frequently spotted along the coastline, as well as a few Pohutukawa flowers trimming the circular boundary as a reminder of the many Pohutukawa trees that can be seen along the coastal road and in the hills. Even though this artwork depicts a specific bay, it somehow feels very familiar and is reminiscent of a Kiwi summer holiday. I aimed to evoke the feeling of looking through a telescope and highlight what were important memories for my customers. It's something I believe many Kiwis would connect with and feel nostalgia for, even if they haven't been to this particular location."
