" The inspiration was threefold: I wanted to paint our national plant; I love the gorgeous mixes of colour produced by blending deep purple and green, which were used for this piece; and one of my favourite watercolour techniques – negative painting, which allowed for the strong contrast of values in the layers of the fern."
